Put Obsolete Steel Back to Work
Steel inventory does not always become obsolete because there is something wrong with the material. Sometimes it is simply the wrong size for the next application.
Rather than scrapping usable steel, H&H can evaluate whether existing material can be reprocessed into a different size or configuration so it can be put back into production. Examples include:
- Reslitting an obsolete coil width into narrower, usable widths
- Cutting existing coil into sheets or blanks
- Reducing material to a different thickness before reslitting
- Reworking material for use in a different application
- Converting otherwise obsolete inventory into usable production material
For higher-value material or larger quantities, recovering obsolete inventory can provide significant savings compared with scrapping the steel and purchasing replacement material.
Corrective Cold Reduction
Our cold reduction mill gives H&H capabilities beyond simply changing the width or length of customer-owned steel. Depending on the material and condition, cold reduction can be used to:
- Re-size material to a different thickness
- Improve thickness consistency
- Correct edge wave
- Correct camber
- Prepare material for subsequent reslitting
- Improve material usability for another application
This gives us the ability to evaluate material that may not currently meet a customer production need and determine whether it can be reworked rather than replaced.

Toll processing is not the primary business of H&H Metal Source, and we are not trying to become a dedicated toll processor. It is about being a better steel supplier and supporting our customers when they have a problem we can help solve.
Our customers production needs do not always fit neatly into a standard steel order. Sometimes they already own the steel. Sometimes a specification changes. Sometimes inventory becomes obsolete. And sometimes material simply needs to be reworked before it can be used.

What is toll processing?
Toll processing is when a steel service center processes material the customer already owns rather than selling them new steel. The customer supplies the coil, H&H performs the processing, and the material comes back ready to use.

Can obsolete steel inventory be reprocessed instead of scrapped?

Can cold reduction correct edge wave or camber?
Depending on the material and its condition, cold reduction can improve thickness consistency and correct edge wave and camber, and can prepare material for subsequent reslitting.
